I don't think Charters is any racist, imho he was speaking figuratively in pointing up the obvious fact that longterm religiously-instilled hatreds could easily blow up the Middle East and that in such an event gold would be a safe haven for wealth. I'm of mixed race myself, and I get along with the man just fine. Those who were so quick to run snivelling to SI Bob with his posts would do well, imho, to start looking for a clue and a sense of humour as well. The only racist I know of on SI is that Emile Vidrine that Henry pointed out. He's more clever with his language lately, using all kinds of fundamental Christian codewords, but is clearly imho a greasy little pointy-headed crossburner, and I wouldn't turn my back on him if he lived around here.
