Natural MicroSystems and Sun Microsystems Join Forces to Provide
High Performance IP Telephony for Network Service and Equipment
Providers

BusinessWire, Monday, September 14, 1998 at 09:06

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--At the Pulver.com
Voice on the Net (VON) conference, Natural MicroSystems (NASDAQ:NMSS),
the technology leader in Open Telecommunications(TM), today announced
it will collaborate with Sun Microsystems to provide high-performance
IP telephony OEM solutions for the network service and equipment
provider market. As a result of the collaboration, Natural
MicroSystems' products, including its industry-leading Fusion IP
telephony platform, will support current and future versions of Sun
Microsystem's Solaris(TM) operating environment and UltraSPARC(TM)
processor-based PCI and CompactPCI CPU boards.
The collaboration enables developers of high-value
telecommunications systems to leverage Natural MicroSystems' proven
DSP-based voice, fax and IP Telephony processing platforms on
high-performance UltraSPARC and Solaris operating environment-based
PCI and cPCI platforms from Sun to provide highly scaleable and
innovative solutions for network-based enhanced services.
"Our technologies are a natural match for bringing
high-performance voice- and fax-over-IP capabilities to the service
provider market," said Joel Hughes, director of IP Telephony, Natural
MicroSystems. "We are looking forward to further extending the reach
of open telecommunications and enabling service providers to deploy
innovative new services more quickly and cost-effectively."
"Telcos and network service providers are eager to take advantage
of the tremendous opportunities that IP telephony offers," said Jeff
Veis, group manager, Telco OEM Products at Sun Microsystems. "The
combination of Sun's high-performance, carrier-grade processing
engines and Natural MicroSystems' proven IP telephony technology
provides a strong foundation for OEM developers targeting these
solutions. Our technologies give both companies a clear leadership
position in this emerging market."
Natural MicroSystems and Sun will be considering opportunities on
both technology development and certification and in co-sales and
co-marketing activities. The companies will work together to establish
compatibility among their PCI and CompactPCI products, thereby
establishing a stable and reliable Open Telecommunications platform
for the creation of high-value enhanced services applications to be
offered by network service providers. The companies will also
investigate joint co-sales and co-marketing initiatives in an effort
to provide IP Telephony OEM solutions to targeted telco accounts.
