Hugh, I'm talking about way way before that.The time you speak of the die was already cast.The Soviet Union was already a changed place .There was no going back once the people got a whiff of freedom You know that under previous regimes no dissent was allowed .I have forgotten the two Russian slogans that he made poplar.Openess I believe was one of them.He allowed dissent something unheard of under the Communists [for obvious reasons as it turned out]and this is what led to the eventual change.His rise to power was the undoing of the Soviets.The unbelievable final blunder of the Communists pez
