Well, this bad news will drive another stake in the heart of any IPO release by nVidia

Yep. nVidia will have to beg for more private money.

the very low price for 3dfx may attract a buyer.

Unfortunately it's a buyer's market for graphics chip companies. <g> Who do you think might buy? AMD I guess is a possibility, or maybe one of the chip set companies (Acer?).

One thing is for sure, there's gonna be a shakeout. TDFX has a strong balance sheet so they certainly have a chance.

Just as an update to my post yesterday right after the news came out, I think that the V2 chipset will continue to sell, but at a much lower rate than the initial 6 months. The 3D cards that are going to be included in the next batch of OEM's will be enough that there will not be a big reason to get a 3D card. My (old) s3 based card is 2D only, so the V2 card I bought significantly added to my graphic experience across all 3D games (I don't even own Quake or Quake II, although I bought Unreal to see what the fuss was about). If I'd already had a Banshee, I don't think that I would have spent the $ on the V2.

Upgradewise, I'll probably buy a new new MB around xmas time (to some sort of Pentium II - up from my P233MMX). With the AGP slot, I'll get a banshee and a pci video card. However, that is much rarer than buying a new computer. If 3dfx isn't on a few high volume OEM's, they'll be sucking wind by early next year.

My theory in investing in this stock was that they'd transition to an OEM supplier and that V2 would give them the cash to do so (and the reputation). Expect for V2 slowing faster than I thought (in this quarter), my reasoning hasn't changed so I'm holding.
