Stephen, the soundingboard site is under construction, and asks that I come by some
other time.

>>written by Fred Dawson. Mr. Dawson, and especially in this article, seems to be beyond his time in understanding the "final gateways" of the next century, IMHO.<<

That almost sounds like a contriction to other accepted notions and principles, since the use of gateways as we know them now as discrete entities is only intended to be a temporary fix. In other words, one would think that viewing deeper into the next century, there would be no need for them.

Without benefit of reading the article, then, I'll proceed cautiously in answering some of your questions later on, but I'll refrain from touching "Hilga The Dancing Machine." Tell me, do they have virtual reality games at those fuel stops? <g>

Got to go to work, later... Frank C.

Leading Voice-Over-IP Enablers Select Sun for Carrier-Grade Offerings; UltraSPARC Delivers Foundation for Next-Generation IP Services and Products

September 16, 1998 WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE) via
NewsEdge Corporation -- Leveraging its
strong product offerings for both telephony
and internet technologies, Sun
Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW), today
announced at the VON (Voice Over Network)
show its full support of voice-over-IP (VoIP)
by offering carrier-grade solutions to telco
original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Building on Sun's high-performance solutions,
companies such as Dialogic, dynamicsoft,
and Natural MicroSystems have developed
telephony/VoIP technologies for the
UltraSPARC(TM) platform.

Telco equipment manufacturers, system
integrators, and service providers can
integrate these technologies into their
next-generation IP services and products for
faster time to market and improved ability to
address emerging telco requirements.

Sun offers a wide range of products to
provide the appropriate level of integration
and performance required to meet the
diverse needs of the internet telephony
marketplace. These products range from
NEBS-compliant, Compact PCI and
Embedded MP boards to high-performance,
Solaris(TM) operating environment-based
Sun Enterprise(TM) servers that support
high-volume VoIP applications.

Additionally, Sun's widely-used,
platform-independent Java(TM) technology
has strong potential for VoIP applications.
By combining Sun products with third party
technologies, OEMs can easily leverage the
scalability, reliability and availability of the
UltraSPARC platform, while choosing
complementary VoIP technology to solve
specific telecommunications needs.

"Sun is pleased that leading voice-over-IP
companies like Dialogic, dynamicsoft, and
Natural Microsystems have chosen Sun
technology as a foundation for their telco
offerings," said Jeff Veis, Group Marketing
Manager of Telco OEM Products for Sun.
"These technologies, combined with Sun's,
range of carrier-grade, high-performance
solutions truly enable OEMs to create the
best solutions to meet their customers'
needs."

"As Internet Telephony grows, it will soon
carry 20 percent of all voice traffic,
representing a three billion dollar market by
the year 2002," said Jeff Pulver, President of
Pulver.com and Chairman of the Voice on
the Net (VON) Coalition.

"Internet telephony equipment, the
infrastructure for networked
telecommunications, will comprise a large
portion of that market. Sun is uniquely
positioned to be the leading supplier into this
market with its proven UltraSPARC
solutions," he concluded.

About Companies Working With Sun:

Dialogic

Dialogic Corporation, the leading
manufacturer of high-performance,
standards-based CT components, has long
been committed to providing its customers
with the industry's most comprehensive
platform support. The company will be
porting the Solaris operating environment to
its DM3 IPLink.

"Dialogic is pleased to support Sun's drive
into internet telephony," said Larry Fromm,
Vice President of New Business
Development.

"Dialogic was the first to show an internet
telephony gateway over two and a half
years ago. Since that time, the nascent
industry has grown tremendously to the
point where internet telephony in the public
telephone network is now reality. Sun's
entry into this market will mean our
customers will have a great option for
extremely robust, reliable systems."

dynamicsoft

Based on industry-standard protocols,
dynamicsoft's jVoIP Framework, the
industry's first Java IP software solution,
enables communications equipment
manufacturers and service providers the
ability to rapidly build services for
transmitting voice/fax over IP networks.

The dynamicsoft jVoIP Framework is a
comprehensive set of "plug-n-play "
software modules, that provides
infrastructure to deliver voice/fax over IP
networks and is designed to become a
leading platform for the development of
enhanced applications in converged network
environments.

The "plug-n-play" nature of the software
provides customers with a reliable
large-scale solution to meet service
providers' needs and offers the flexibility to
add new software solutions as desired.

"By working with Sun, we are able to provide
communications equipment providers and
ISPs best-in-class software and hardware
solutions that enable them to remain
competitive in today's rapidly changing
networking environment, " said Dennis
Specht, co-CEO of dynamicsoft.

Natural MicroSystems

Natural MicroSystems (Nasdaq:NMSS) is the
technology leader in open
telecommunications, providing hardware and
software technologies for developers of
high-value telecommunications solutions.

The company's state-of-the-art technology
enables a growing international network of
OEMs, VARs, systems integrators and
service providers to reduce time to market,
leverage development resources, and offer
truly global communications products.
Natural MicroSystems products are installed
in more than 40 countries worldwide.

"Natural MicroSystems' industry-leading
Fusion products and Sun's UltraSPARC and
Solaris solutions combine to make a great,
high-performance platform for developers of
telco-grade IP telephony equipment," said
Joel Hughes, director of IP telephony,
Natural MicroSystems.

"Our VON demonstration shows how the
stability and reliability of the UltraSPARC and
Solaris environment and the high-density of
our hot-swappable Compact PCI technology
creates the kind of scalable, high-availability
system the carrier market demands."

Qwest teams with Netscape to market services Denver-based IP-telephony provider Qwest Communications this morning announced a three-year alliance with famed Web-browser developer Netscape Communications that calls for creation of a browser system known as Netscape Contact that will let customers manage their own telephone and Internet communications. The system will feature an electronic "inbox" to keep tabs on LD calls, conference calls, faxes, emails and Internet access. Also under terms of the agreement, Netscape will utilize bandwidth along Qwest nationwide fiber-optic network now under construction to improve the performance of its content-rich Netscape Netcenter Web site. The deal calls for Qwest sales agents to market Netscape software to business customers, as well. Netscape Contact is expected to be introduced by the end of the month.
