The fund may be short gold because it is concerned about the state of the other 97% of its assets, and this is their way of saying it. And as suggested, when gold nears a breakout or upper resistance, the offense is certain to emerge.

Terry, I suspect there are powerful forces short gold at play in this market. I moreover suspect these short positions are supported only by hype,"news", and control of funds(not selling gold based funds through 401k plans). I have sent a letter to the SEC asking if "analysts" who downgrade gold as an investment work for major brokerage houses/ banks which hold a short position, but fail to disclose that position.
