That makes sense. I've had many dealings with Apple over the years for repair issues, and nearly all of them have had positive outcomes.

Apple's turnaround time on the PowerBooks I've sent them for under-warranty repairs is nothing short of astounding. You can call them one day, have the free shipping box at your door the next, return it and get it back again in two days. This means if you inform Apple of the problem on a Monday, you'll likely have the fixed PowerBook back in your hands by Thursday of that same week.

With local Apple dealers, it's a very hit-and-miss proposition. I know two shops in my area that I respect highly and will take Macs to without hesitation. Others I wouldn't cross the street to spit on their sidewalk. Sounds like your friend found one of the latter.
