Christine,

I'm hardly an expert, but I recall from some long-lost reading that a "world teacher" named Maitreya was much in vogue during a brief period in (I'm pretty sure) the '20s. I think he had a prophet, but nobody was quite sure who he (Maitreya, not the prophet) was. This he seems to have in common with the current version, unless he's been around all along.

I don't know much about the current version either, but although he does seem to be more pacifistic and ecumenical than your average garden variety messiah, there's more that a touch of the old "blieve in me, and everything will be ok". I read something about him, and I got about as far as something about appearing simultaneously to the whole world before shutting down. For one thing, the prophet gave the impression of being a total charlatan.

Of course I am not well disposed toward messiahs in any event, a prejudice which may disqualify my evaluation.
