Christine, I really don't know much about the impact of Buddhism on Japanese culture and politics, and even less about its effects on Japan during World War II. I am aware of an instance of a Buddhist majority oppressing a minority culture - it's in Sri Lanka and it's happening right now. The majority Sinhalese, which are mostly Buddhist, are doing some nasty things to the Tamil minority. I really don't know much about the situation and how Buddhism plays a role, perhaps there are some Sri Lankan lurkers on the thread who'd like to contribute.
