Mylex and Lucent Technologies to Provide RAID Technology for Next-Generation Voice Messaging System
Tuesday September 15 9:11am BusinessWire
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 1998-- Lucent Chooses Mylex RAID Controllers to Deliver Real-Time Streaming of Digitized Voice Messages Mylex Corp. (Nasdaq:MYLX), the world's leading RAID controller vendor in the non-captive network systems marketplace, today announced that it and Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) have developed storage technology for Lucent's next-generation voice messaging platform, the IMA-CA (Intelligent Messaging Architecture -- Caller Applications).
Joint development on the system began twelve months ago. The IMA-CA voice messaging platform is Lucent's new voice messaging system which will allow wireline and wireless service providers worldwide to offer advanced voice messaging services to their subscribers. IMA-CA begins shipping this month.
"Lucent will be providing our customers with increased value and security by embedding Mylex's RAID technology into IMA-CA," said Walter Fant, systems architect at the Lucent Technologies Octel Messaging Division.
"Mylex stepped up to the plate and invested significant engineering resources to develop custom firmware that supports real-time archiving and playback of digitized voice messages. Mylex also developed special technology which allows customers of our popular Sierra family of voice messaging products to migrate to Mylex RAID functionality while utilizing their existing storage resource investments."
"The IMA-CA represents a significant advance over traditional voice messaging systems," said Ron Von Trapp, Mylex vice president of marketing and sales.
"The system was architected from the ground up to serve as a platform for advanced voice messaging features, such as voice-to-email forwarding, voice-to-fax forwarding, voice paging and multi-language voice recognition. We're pleased Lucent chose to work with Mylex to provide the RAID storage functionality for these exciting applications."
IMA-CA Will Deliver Reliable Message Storage and Retrieval for Lucent Customers
IMA-CA has received NEBS (Network Equipment Building Standard) certification, which demonstrates that the system has been designed for reliable service performance in demanding telecommunications environments.
IMA-CA will integrate Mylex's popular DAC960SX RAID controller, which provides the high performance necessary to support real-time streaming of digitized voice messages. The controller's high performance is enabled by custom firmware developed for Lucent by Mylex and by a 66 MHz Intel (Nasdaq:INTC) i960 RISC co-processor.
The DAC960SX's fault tolerance capabilities will ensure reliable access to archived messages, even in the unlikely event of a hard drive or controller failure. Lucent will be taking advantage of the DAC960SX's controller failover feature, which allows customers to deploy a standby controller that automatically assumes control of the RAID system should the primary RAID controller fail.
"The fault-tolerance and performance enabled by the Mylex technology will become increasingly important to our customers as we introduce new applications which address the convergence of voice and data," added Fant.
