that was hilarious!

i was not sure how many verys he would add if this period of
maturity was not yet upon us!

so the trick is to convert the number of verys into not monster
(Godzilla) years but monsterette (Godzillaette) years <g>

heck if 1999 turns out to be a crap shoot that will mean
that 2000 will have to be very very good...

then if 2000 turns out to be a crap shoot that will mean
that 2001 will have to be very very very good...

so many many opportunities to dollar cost average down... are we just
lucky or what? <ggg>

But seriously folks, I actually think the kicker will be the Chinese. My sense is that the numbers for electronics consumption (something
around 900 billion or so) is kinda low. Typically chips are
around 15% or so of electronics - to wit .15 * 900 = 135 billion
which is about the expected semi output this year).

But "At the same time, despite its higher price tag, DVD is expected to post steady gains here. Some believe DVD may be the dominant digital-videodisk format in China by 2001."
(from: eet.com aka greek)

Now with the Chinese and all the new uses of chips we ought to
see that 900 billion go up and the 15% go up as well hopefully to
something like 20%...

Yes I am now the optimistic beggar <g>

Our friends at VLSI having problems with design iterations as well:
( biz.yahoo.com - LSI had a
"similar" but not as ambitious announcement a few months ago)

---
from the above:

Time-to-Market and the Design Productivity Gap

Semiconductors to power the mass-market products of the 21st century face a number of challenges. They need to be
customized to provide as much highly differentiated functionality as possible. They must get to market quickly to catch
fast-moving product life-cycle windows. They must offer high levels of functionality at competitive costs. Finally, the chips must
work flawlessly in the marketplace, requiring thorough system verification during the development process.

Before the semiconductor industry achieves the system-on-a-chip vision, it must first overcome a widening design productivity
gap limiting product designers' ability to take full advantage of advanced IC manufacturing technologies.

While today's IC process technologies can economically produce chips with 10 to 20 million transistors, current design
methods make it too risky for the majority of product designers to consider custom ICs integrating more than a million
transistors. This ten-to-one gap between design technology capability and manufacturing capacity has led to calls from
semiconductor industry figures -- customers, technologists, market analysts and editors -- for new design methodologies.

----

I guess these are all the pains of being bleeding edge - the companies are bleeding and my check book shows a lot of red - must be
a connection <g>

----

Anyway this design "hiccup" thing has to end one day - maybe our glasses of water have been spiked with benzene <g> - hopefully one day in the not too distant future the 3rd degree wallet burns will by then have healed... <g>

Shane (hey the next post is 15000 - it was just yesterday that
the dreams of post 10000 were enunciated before the stock price
summarily proceeded to crash and burn...).
