PC news from Taiwan-Looking good Greg: Take a peek into what is in store for the 2nd half of the year. ============================================== Source:(Commercial Times, Taiwan) September 14, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Several top global notebook computer companies liquidated their inventories in the first half of 1998, so Taiwan makers are getting more orders for the fourth quarter, traditionally a peak season for the industry. Local makers such as Acer Inc., First International Computer Inc., Clevo Co. and Compal Electronic Inc. have all benefited from the trend. Acer, the largest domestic computer manufacturing group, reported an average monthly output of 40,000 notebook computers in the second quarter. The figure climbed to 50,000 to 60,000 in the third quarter after Acer's major strategic alliance partner, IBM Corp., increased orders. Acer estimates that it's annual notebook computer output will reach 900,000 units. Compal Electronics Inc., the original equipment manufacturer for Dell Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Fujitsu Ltd., said its third-quarter output will hit 200,000 units, and fourth-quarter output is expected to rise to 260,000 units. Total output in the second half of the year is seen increasing by 70 percent when compared to the first half of the year. Annual output is estimated at 750,000 units, which may push the fifth-largest notebook computer maker in Taiwan up one to two notches. Inventec Corp. reported mediocre performance for the first three quarters due to sliding demand from the company's major buyer, Compaq Computer Corp. However, output is expected to reach its peak of between 700,000 and 800,000 units in late 1998. Arima Computer Corp., another local OEM maker for Compaq, estimated its annual output at 630.000 units. Twinhead International Corp. recently received orders from Europe and Sharp Corp., and its fourth-quarter output is likely to exceed 40,000. Annual output will only hit 450,000, well below the previous 550,000 target. Thanks to an annual order of 600,000 notebook computers from NEC Corp., First International Computer's monthly output will jump from 15,000 to 60,000 units. The company and Clevo both estimate their annual output at 300,000 units.
