Chunghwa Telecom Awards Nortel (Northern Telecom) US$40 Million
Contract For Expansion of GSM Cellular Network

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Nortel (Northern Telecom) (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) has been awarded a contract valued at over US$40 million for a third
expansion of the Chunghwa Telecom GSM 900 digital cellular network.

Nortel was awarded the initial contract in 1994. Under the initial contract, Nortel provided Chunghwa Telecom with a complete turn-key digital cellular telephone system
including radios, switches, and other hardware as well as all engineering, installation, commissioning and maintenance support. The network supports mobile phone
services for all of the major regions of Taiwan.

This third expansion will include the installation of additional Nortel BTS radio equipment to the GSM network. This radio equipment provides industry-leading
performance in receive sensitivity resulting in better coverage and clear audio quality. The expansion will also increase Chunghwa Telecom's GSM existing network
capacity by four hundred thousand subscribers. This brings the overall network capacity to 1.5 million subscribers.

In addition to supporting Chunghwa Telecom's GSM 900 expansion program, Nortel is also providing complete equipment for the operator's GSM 1800 network, under
terms of an initial US$150 million contract awarded in July 1997. In operation since the middle of this year, the GSM 1800 network is capable of delivering advanced
personal communications services to one million Taiwanese subscribers.

Intermedia Selects Nortel's (Northern Telecom's) Optical Networking Solution
For A Nationwide Network Build

ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Intermedia Communications, Inc., one of the nation's largest competitive local exchange carriers, plans to enhance its
network serving and interconnecting major U.S. metropolitan centers using Nortel's (Northern Telecom's) (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) optical network solutions. The
contract extension is valued at approximately US$25 million over three years, and the equipment will be deployed throughout the U.S. Centralized end-to-end network
monitoring will be provided by Nortel's Integrated Network Management (INM) solution. The contract was announced today at the National Fiber Optic Engineers
Conference (NFOEC) in Orlando, which continues until September 17.

Using Nortel's optical networking solutions, Intermedia plans to rapidly expand its high-speed nationwide backbone. Intermedia will continue to grow its IP, ATM, frame
relay, ISDN, private line, voice and other bandwidth- intensive offerings to its customer-base. Additionally, Intermedia will utilize Nortel's 2.5 and 10 Gbps high-capacity
optical solutions to create a highly reliable backbone linking major U.S. centers.

''Nortel's optical networking products provide the best end-to-end networking solution in support of Intermedia's new build-outs,'' said Bob Rouse, executive
vice-president, Engineering, Systems & Operations, Intermedia. ''Intermedia has a strong presence in many intra-city markets, and our customers will be well served
today and in the future through Nortel's technology innovations.''

The metro builds, using Nortel's 2.5 Gbps (OC-48) product, will be configured in Bi-Directional Line Switched Rings (BLSR) for ultimate network reliability. The local
transport applications, bringing the power and bandwidth of fiber optic transmission closer to business customers, will be transported over Nortel's OC-3 Express and
OC-12 optical products.

''Nortel's expertise in metropolitan applications will further enhance Intermedia's business customers service offering,'' said Mike Unger, president, Optical Networks,
Nortel. ''Where applications require high-bandwidth support, speed and network reliability are critical, providing customers with a quick and responsive
telecommunications network.''

The entire network will be monitored by Nortel's INM system that provides operational simplicity with a simple point-and-click interface, with the ability to graphically
configure a network of any size.

Intermedia Communications is one of the nation's fastest growing telecommunications companies, providing integrated telecommunications solutions to business and
government customers. These solutions include voice and data, local and long distance, and advanced network access services in major U.S. markets. Intermedia's

Nortel (Northern Telecom) First in World to Provided Four-Fiber Rings on 10
Gbps Network Solution

ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Nortel (Northern Telecom) (NYSE: NT, Toronto: NTL), the world's leading supplier of high-capacity optical networking
systems, has delivered another technology breakthrough by supplying bi-directional four-fiber rings for 10 Gbps networks. Nortel four- fiber rings operating at 10 Gbps
have been placed into commercial service and further implementation of this powerful solution, which provides the best reliability available in the industry today, are
anticipated throughout major networks in 1998 and beyond. The application, believed to be the first such demonstration of four-fiber BLSR on a 10 Gbps platform with
32-wavelength Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (D-WDM), is being demonstrated here at the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC), which
continues until September 17 (Nortel booth No.453).

''Nortel has maintained leadership in 10 Gbps and D-WDM worldwide with more than 90 percent marketshare, throughout the two years since we first introduced our
S/DMS TransportNode OC-192,'' said Mike Unger, president, Optical Networks, Nortel. ''With some 11 major networks having deployed the 10 Gbps solution, it's
evident that many of them will take advantage of the self-restoring capability of our four-fiber rings which provide the kind of service reliability and performance needed
in today's mission critical data and voice communications.''

Nortel's four-fiber rings ride on the optical layer of the network and provide operational simplicity, self-restoration capability in milliseconds, and sophisticated bandwidth
management for least cost per bit operation. By combining its D-WDM technology and its ring expertise, Nortel has derived survivability that is unsurpassed in the
industry.

Along with OC-192/D-WDM market leadership, Nortel is the leader in bi-directional line switched rings (BLSR), a proven and highly cost-effective technology that is
supporting the national backbones of the new millennium.

Nortel already provides the highest capacity per fiber for optical networks of up to 160 Gbps using Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (D-WDM), and has now
doubled that capacity by providing 32 wavelength capability before year end. A number of service providers are preparing to close large SONET BLSR rings to take
advantage of Nortel's total network capacity benefits. Nortel's Integrated Network Management gives those service providers the additional advantage of end-to-end
network management not attainable in hybrid networks.

''Network operators are looking for a robust technology solution that can cost-effectively handle the demanding backbone networking requirements for a wide variety of
services,'' said Unger. ''Given all the technologies available today, the D-WDM OC-192 4-fiber BLSR architecture delivers the lowest cost-per-bit-mile, the best system
performance, ultimate reliability, and network integrity -- all the reasons why the market has clearly endorsed Nortel's OC-192 technology.''
