I do not understand why were you surprised by the statement that BEAM and VISX will become fierce competitors. Simply because they are in exactly the same field. That makes them fierce competitors by definition. Am I missing something here ?

Pappy, at least in terms of sales, in 1997 BEAM was larger (88.8M vs 68.6 M). In the first 2 Q's of 1998 VISX moved ahead (56M vs.45.2M). But, VISX is more than 4X larger in market capitalization.Sure would like to see that change due to BEAM increased share price though.
