Rhone-Poulenc's BALANCE(R) Brand Herbicide Receives Registration for Use in Much of U.S. Corn Belt RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Rhone-Poulenc Ag Company's BALANCE(R) brand corn herbicide received regulatory approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today, ushering in a breakthrough herbicide for growers in the U.S. Corn Belt. Discovered by Rhone-Poulenc, BALANCE is an extremely low-dose product that controls more than 40 broadleaf weeds and grasses in field corn. Under the registration agreement, BALANCE will be introduced for the 1999 growing season in 16 key corn-producing states. Those states are Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming. ''This registration means growers in these Corn Belt states will have an important new herbicide that possesses a unique mode of action,'' said Rhone-Poulenc Ag Company President and Chief Executive Officer Alan J. Reade. ''It will be a new day in terms of corn herbicide product performance.'' As part of the registration, Rhone-Poulenc will conduct an unprecedented research and monitoring program to demonstrate that the product is compatible with protecting surface and ground water and nearby plants. The results of the program are expected to lead to the approved use of BALANCE in even more corn-growing states. ''This research will provide the most thorough picture of groundwater, surface water and plant effects data in our industry,'' noted Reade. ''It will be a pro-active, comprehensive gathering of information that we believe will support the use of BALANCE elsewhere.'' Overall herbicide sales in the Corn Belt states where BALANCE is now approved total more than $1.2 billion annually. As a low-dose alternative, BALANCE is a water-dispersible granule applied at 1 to 3 ounces of product per acre. Applied up to 14 days before planting, its active ingredient isoxaflutole provides eight to 10 weeks of residual control with the unique characteristic of recharging with moisture to knock down emerged weeds up to two inches tall. It also offers burndown activity on emerged weeds in minimum till or no-till programs. Rhone-Poulenc Ag Company is the North American unit of French-based Rhone-Poulenc Agro, one of the world's leading crop protection products companies. It is also a subsidiary of Rhone-Poulenc S.A. (NYSE: RP - news), a leading life sciences company, growing through innovations in human, plant and animal health, and through its specialty chemicals subsidiary, Rhodia. With sales in 1997 of FF90 billion (US $15 billion), the company employs 68,000 people in 160 countries worldwide.
