Shed the net so we can chase bigger fish.

Interesting idea. A PC company maybe.

If their concept is to leverage the central sites with top notch Java based apps would they need a PC company at all?

They can just use the internet ready desktop devices they already have available. Same device would work at home as would work in your office. Don't really even need any local storage if I can have some disk where I keep my EMAIL.

I am warming to the idea of shedding the net, but not for DOJ avoidance. Maybe the concept of a proprietary hardwired net is just dead and IBM has figured this out. There are plenty of other internet ready bandwidth providers out there.

An interesting thought, the breakup of MSFT. As you know, that was
the theme years ago with IBM, that is break it up. Even as late as
the Akers era, without govt. influence, he was organizing on business
lines so he could sell off the pieces. Bad idea. Gerstner's strategy
of leveraging IBM's considerable size is much more effective. I dont
think the DOJ will attemp to break up MSFT. Their goal is to get them
to eliminate their predatory business practices such that their
monopoly doesnt stifle competition and in turn, technology development
which is key to being the world leader in commerce. MSFT's arrogant
attitude is killing them. They could have 98% of what they want just
by having more flexible business practices and innovative pricing
methodologies.
