NEWSDAY, Monday
Sudan's powerful ideological leader, Hassan Al-Turabi, claims to remember the time he visited the United States in the early 1980s when he was the country's attorney general. Over lunch, the U.S. president, eager to show his familiarity with his visitor's homeland, said, "Oh sure, I know where Sudan is. It's in Latin America!" Al-Turabi recalls with a giggle. "That was Reagan," he adds scornfully. "He hadn't read his briefing."
