Until the last moment, you are right. Because the evidence of Nixon's own involvement in the vast conspiracy below him was not unambiguous. After the "smoking gun" of the White House tapes was released to Congress upon the order of the Supreme Court, the proof of Nixon's deep involvement was inarguable. He resigned very, very soon thereafter. All of his support from his own party collapsed. Some were stunned into inaction. The leadership formed a delegation to tell Nixon he could either resign, or quickly loose an overwhelming vote convicting him of impeachment in the Senate.
