brief citing in my local rag. glassman's got the front page column 1 of each sunday's business section. he kicks it off with an unrelated short blurb called "inside scoop." fwiw:

The Inside Scoop
By James K. Glassman

Ladenburg Thalmann & Co. (1-800-523-8425) is small, but over the past year it has whipped the 15 largest brokerage firms in one key category: the returns that its recommended stocks have achieved. LT was up 57 percent for the 12 months ending June 30, according to Zack's Investment Research, compared with 30 percent for the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index. The secret? "We are management obsessed," research director Barry Sahgal told me. Great companies have great chief executives.

The eclectic LT list: Bluegreen Corp. (BXG), time-share resorts; Candie's Inc. (CAND), shoes; Comverse Technology Inc. (CMVT), voice mail; Evergreen Resources Inc. (EVER), natural gas; Hot Topic Inc. (HOTT), music-related products; Imax Corp. (IMAXF), big-screen movies; and TMP Worldwide Inc. (TMPW), Internet advertising.

Comverse Technology's Network Systems Division Participating In Inter-System Messaging Technology Trials In Europe Utilizing Voice Profile For Internet Mail Messaging Protocol
September 23, 1998 08:55 AM

WOODBURY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1998--Comverse Network Systems, a division of Comverse Technology, Inc. (CMVT), and the world's leading supplier of enhanced services platforms to communication network operators, announced today that it is participating in a series of technology trials of inter-system messaging to be conducted in Europe throughout 1998 and 1999.

The trials, sponsored by the International Association of Voice Mail and Voice Processing Services (VMA), will demonstrate messaging among different vendors' systems and different services utilizing the Voice Profile for Internet Mail (VPIM) messaging protocol. The trials initially will link service providers throughout Europe and are designed to promote enhancements in services for subscribers in areas such as sending messages between wireline and wireless networks and depositing multi-media messages, including voice, fax, and e-mail, into a single mailbox. The first of a series of three trials will kick off in Athens, Greece on September 23, 1998.

Comverse has long demonstrated its commitment to inter-system messaging, being one of the first messaging companies to implement the Audio Messaging Interchange Specification (AMIS-D and AMIS-A) standards to support voice messaging between its and other vendors' messaging platforms. Comverse is enhancing its current inter-system messaging capabilities by supporting VPIM in its two main product lines, the Access NP(R) and the TRILOGUE(tm) INfinity(tm) and is working with some of its customers to define additional fixed-mobile integration and mobile-office integration services based on the VPIM protocol. Comverse also is a member of the Electronic Mail Association's committee, which is responsible for defining VPIM.

"We are pleased to participate in VMA's initiative," said Brian D. Wiltshire, Executive Vice President, Corporate Marketing and Strategic Accounts of Comverse Network Systems. "We believe this initiative will move the industry even closer to Comverse's vision of true integration of voice, fax and e-mail and further promote the creation and adoption of a truly universal unified messaging service."
