Impeachment is only for public crimes of the president

It seems to me that perjury in front of a grand jury and lying to the people of America are very public crimes.

Those who argue that impeachment should apply only in cases where the criminal laws have been broken do so based upon an incomplete understanding of the Constitution. In fact, our Founders were careful to make sure that impeachment proceedings took place in the legislative branch rather than the judicial so that the same body would not have to try an impeachment case and a criminal case.

Under English common law, which provides the foundation for the process of impeachment in our Constitution, impeachable offenses included "maladministration," which typically does not constitute criminal conduct.
