Paul, I spent 5 months as an officer aboard a merchant ship staffed with German officers. As a lone American Jew, an understanding had to be reached. We re-fought WWII for the first 2 months. Small amounts of blood occasionally were spilled. Had an Austrian Cook who whenever he became upset with the officers called them f***ing nazis. Just like an Austrian. But we all became good shipmates. Found myself with the German chief engineer in one of those kinds of bars in Singapore that happened that night to be filled to capacity with U.S. marines. They began singing the "Star Spangled Banner" - God knows why - something drunk marines do on occasion I suppose. The Chief stood up and sang "Deutschland, Deutschland Uber Alles". Surrounded by 150 drunk marines I had to explain that yes the German fellow and I were together. Thought I deserved citizenship for that. Rich
