The Alpha - and eventually the 21264 Alpha - are excellent CPUs.

However, they are extremely expensive and have been (up until recently) proprietary.

The high volume/reasonable cost associated with Intel's x86 line make it a preferable platform for low to mid-range server functions.

I'm sure Intel will be pushing into the UPPER END - now occupied by Alpha and Sun - with their new generation of Tanner and Cascades chips due out next year.
