<<NEW YORK, Sept 16 (Reuters) - The Dow industrials fell in afternoon trade Wednesday after Fed chief Alan Greenspan told Congress there
were no coordinated interest rate cuts in the works among the industrialised nations.

Stocks rose earlier this week on hopes that Group of Seven countries would cut rates to ease the pain of global financial turmoil.

''I think that I can safely say that at the moment there is no endeavor to coordinate interest rate cuts,'' Greenspan told the House Banking
Committee.

At 1425 EDT/1825 GMT, the Dow was off 38 points at 7985.

The NYSE set index arbitrage trading curbs at 1417 EDT/1817 GMT.

''I think there was great expectation that the little hint Greenspan gave a couple of weeks ago would be put into action,'' said Thom Brown, managing director of Rutherford Brown
and Catherwood.

''There have been so many economists calling for a cut, andwithout any sign that it is going happen, the market is disappointed,'' Brown added.>>
