Being in real estate, every now and then I need a substantial check before the end of the day to close a deal. I can go right to Schwab (and then to the bank next door) and get a cashier's check in 10 minutes without having to park money at the bank for several days.

I could do the same at Waterhouse, too.

Brown lists 12 local offices all across the country in their brochure, each with its own 800 number and physical address. They sound like a good broker and I've read only good things about them here on SI. I'll probably move my secondary trading account to Brown from Web St. One nice thing is that phone orders with a broker are still only 5 or 10 dollars. And with 12 800 numbers, you're likely to get through when your internet is down.

Not that it means anything as to the situation today, but I had an account with Brown back in the 70's. They were among the cheapest, had only a Boston office, and then you often got the same broker when you called a trade in. Very efficient
Good old days!

I did my first online trading with Brown today. Very fast executions, a price improvement on a limit order, and good web site. It took them about 15 minutes to deduct each transaction from my balance (Datek does it instantly). Two drawbacks: you get a low rate of interest on cash in the account and I believe the total has to be $1000 or more to receive interest (I'll check this out) and the interest is (I believe) 3% on cash balances; 2nd, the number of free quotes are limited to 100 with an additional 100 added to your total for each trade (Datek is unlimited). Good Luck, Joe
