REALNETWORKS INC (RNWK) 24 3/8 +4 3/4: RealNetworks shares haven't been the same since the company informed the market that Microsoft was nudging the Seattle-based software company out of bed. Formally a Microsoft strategic partner, the developer of multimedia streaming software cried foul in July, alleging that Microsoft was purposely taking actions that prevented RNWK software from functioning properly. Specifically, company contended that the Windows OS version of Microsoft Windows Media Player disrupted consumer use of RealNetworks' media players. Microsoft refuted the argument with a report that said the bug which causes RealNetworks' RealPlayer G2 software to malfunction is actually an error in that product. Appropriately concerned that the software giant was preparing to wrest control of this market from RNWK , investors fled from the stock. (Chart). Today they are coming back to the shares on news the company has teamed with chip-giant Intel Corp to improve the quality of video on the Internet and to apparently help the company fend off the challenge from Microsoft. The companies announced an agreement to further accelerate broad-scale deployment of next-generation streaming media programming on the Internet and intranets. Under terms of the deal, RealNetworks has licensed and integrated Intel Streaming Web Video software technology into RealSystem G2. In exchange, Intel will work with RealNetworks to promote and market the technology to Web media authors. As of June, it was estimated that 85% of streaming web pages used RealNetworks and that RealPlayer was being downloaded at a rate of 600,000 units per week.
