Yes, this is not a widely appreciated aspect of the model. There was a book written in 1983 called Zero Inventories by Robert Hall with the American Product and Inventory Control Society which explains a lot of the benefits and methodology behind JIT production. One important correction: you said "so you're hounding that the DELL's BTO model (not just any model) should be offered a premium is becoming clear" [italics added for emphasis] Shame on you.
