No, I am not surprised. You MUST get a rally before you can have a significant decline in a bear, just like you must have pullbacks before you can get significant rallies in a bull.

The performance of MER is a good indicator of where the mkt is headed, if you think MER is going south... the mkt will go w/ it.

On a funny note: I have CNBC on this morning (want watch Greenspeech!) I noticed a CNBC commercial showing high school students buying and selling stocks for a stock tournament... CAN we say TOP!!! (G)
