Is it not true that success can never be measured from the outside looking in?

Could it be the case that societies view, by rote, is irrelevant?

Won't an individual's view, as one looks back over a life be the guiding factor....perhaps enhanced if societies measurements coincide with ones own but never wholly dependant on it?
