What is it that he has done so well?

Leading a political compromise that has lead to the first sustainably balanced budget since the 1920s. There are three elements to the balanced budget: a) the tax increase principally on those with the highest incomes early in his first term; b) the budget reductions strongly pushed by the Republicans, which Clinton lead his party to compromise upon and largely accept (and which party Clinton lead to believe that a balanced budget was indeed more important for the advancement of the lower half than many expensive social programs); and c) an unprecedentedly fast growing economy. The fast growing economy was strongly related to the balanced budget, as well as partly related to the excellent management of his economic team, Rubin, and Greenspan who he supported remaining in place.

Bosnia was indeed a great accomplishment, however frayed that eternally volatile area may be, as was the Irish peace, however fragile. Don't forget the Oslo peace accords, sadly wounded by an Israeli assassin's bullet. They will yet lead to peace, however tragically delayed. Welfare reform, though a Republican wish for decades, would never have become reality (or been compromised into a fairer and more workable form), without Clinton's taking up the cause.

He has helped form a new centrism in American politics. Some Republican push was needed (and I supported it), but also some centrism which the Republicans have yet to provide. Which is why Newt is so little trusted by the bulk of the people.
