Who's definition of "normal" are you using? ;-)
I haven't seen the results of any recent studies but a semi-educated guess would be highly unlikely. As an example, I have a HD that's over 7 years old and have had no (knock on wood) problems. I've always used a surge protector and a stand-by-power supply thus isolating my HD from "unscheduled or unexpected" shut-downs.
