Just a literary note for what it's worth. I got curious about the incessant use of the word "hype," and knowing it is short for "hyperbole," I wanted a precise definition (thanks to dictionary.com):hyperbole \Hy*per"bo*le\, n. [L., fr. Gr?, prop., an overshooting, excess, fr. Gr. ? to throw over or beyond; "ype'r over + ? to throw. See Hyper-, Parable, and cf. Hyperbola.] (Rhet.) A figure of speech in which the expression is an evident exaggeration of the meaning intended to be conveyed, or by which things are represented as much greater or less, better or worse, than they really are; a statement exaggerated fancifully, through excitement, or for effect. In common usage today, "hype" is an exaggeration toward the plus side, but the actual definition includes exaggeration toward either extreme. When so-called FNTN "thread insiders" (evil undercover hirelings of worthless companies intent on jacking up their share prices) do "hype" it generally falls under the second meaning, "a statement exaggerated fancifully, through excitement, or for effect." Who, of the long-time investors in FNTN, has not gotten excited, fanciful, or desired to exaggerate the taste of their tomatoes (or Toll House cookies)? The first meaning includes the phrase "evident exaggeration." This rules out a secret agenda because if the exaggeration is "evident," the evil motives would be obvious to the reader, defeating the hidden purpose of the writer. By this definition, we are all "hypers," including the bashers, because the meaning includes exaggeration to minimize as well as maximize. Just think of it! ALL contributors to this thread, whether pro or con, long or short, are under the same umbrella definition of "hype" if they "evidently exaggerate" at all, from excitement, flight of fancy, or for effect! We're all just one big family of exaggeratin' sons-a-guns, trying to out-hype each other. What a refreshing new way to see the rancorous conflicts in recent postings! The above definition leaves out those who lie, cheat, hide motives, or enjoy others' pain. There are other words to describe them... All the best, M.
