Ericsson Launches 3G Phones Early Next Year
By James Ludden at Bloomberg News
16-SEP-98

Ericsson AB, the world's third-largest maker of mobile phones, plans to start selling its
next generation of phones early next year, newswire Direkt reported, citing a spokesman
for the Swedish company's mobile phone unit.

The company had earlier said the new "platform" for the phones would be introduced in
the first half of 1999, without being more specific. The company also plans to introduce
new models of its current generation of phones in the next few months, the newspaper
said, citing the spokesman.

Ericsson's shares have plunged 38% since the company at the end of July said phone
sales stagnated in the second quarter as slowing economies and plunging currencies
prompted Asian customers to put infrastructure projects on hold. Since then, the
economic malaise has spread to other emerging markets. Brazil, Ericsson's fifth-largest
market, has seen a flight of capital that's drained $20 billion from its currency reserves
since the end of July.

"There are a number of factors of concern around Ericsson, the biggest of them being
Asia, South America, the internal 'October revolution' and mobile phone sales," said
Henrik Soederberg, an analyst at Hagstroemer & Qviberg.

In October, Ericsson will announce a reorganization that Soederberg expects will include
management changes and a more centralized organization.
