Regarding the new product every 6 mos: seems to me that they are sticking pretty close to this with V2 then Banshee. I don't recall a new Retail and OEM part every 6 mos. That would be new product on a quarterly basis, and would be nice, but not possible.

TNT in 6 mos for less money than TDFX R&D? Where did you get that Patrick? Are you suggesting that when the Riva came out in Q3 '97 that nVidia sat around counting the cash until Q2 '98, then began working on TNT? Or do you think that they had the whole R&D team working on getting the Riva to be able to use a few more MBs on board? :)

For the record, I am as pissed as you are, or anybody else for that matter. But I do believe in their technology and balance sheet. I think the playing field will be different this time next year with siii and tdddf no longer around, at least not in current form.

As for 2nd generation 3D chips removing the need for retail high end gaming boards, I disagree. It is easy to sit here today and say that Q2 is as fast as you need it, and as pretty as can be. But that is because we are not looking towards the future. 3D has SO far to go. Who knows what is in development for x-mas '99.

What's wrong with 3dfx's expense management?

I'm not sure. If Nvidia can produce TNT in six months at half the operating expenses of 3dfx you tell me. Do you expect over 50M per quarter EVERY quarter next year? By your own admission Rampage will not be here until this time NEXT YEAR (18 month cycle). This means that 3dfx will be relying on Voodoo2 technology for the next year for all their OEM/retail products while everybody else eats their lunch. Rendition, 3dlabs, and ATI all have new products coming out. At least one should readily whip the crap out of Voodoo2. I won't even go into products coming out next year.

Put in this light, it would appear that 4th quarter may be the last profitable quarter 3dfx will ever see. By the time rampage comes to the scene they may have S3'd themselves into oblivion.

Considering Sun Tzu's success in generating interest in creating a short squeeze, I am proposing that we unite in contacting 3Dfx investor relations urging a stock buy-back program. With close to $100 million in cash and no debt I feel that they best use for a portion of this money is to repurchase stock at this depressed level.

I realize that they will need a cash reserve to cushion a industry shakeout, but management has the responsibility to support the price of its stock. I urge anyone who is planning on holding this stock to contact management to show Wall Street that it believes in the future of the company by calling in some of the outstanding shares.

I hope that the people on this thread share my belief and will support this effort.

Thanks,
DCB
