I think that the military rules have since been amended to avoid having to pass over in that sort of case.

In any event the codes of military justice to not apply to this or any other President. Our commander in chief is a civilian, and not a military, leader.

Thank god.

The military culture has bred some pretty extreme cases in high positions. General Curtis LeMay being perhaps the scariest. Though McCarthur's great itchiness to get in a full fledged war with the communist Chinese was no picnic either.

Hi Betty,

I think that situation ("a case of a general whose name was taken out of contention for the Joint Chiefs position") is much more akin to the Clinton/Lewinsky affair. Wherein the General's case he was considered as no longer appropriate in personal character for such an august post as Chief of Staff. Of course the military is sometimes seen as having a much more disciplined and some might even say rigid view of such things. I suppose we must have a lower bar for public officials.
