I think what this is about is top line revenue growth and getting 1 billion computers connected. It is the space that Lucent, AT&T, and others are looking to for future growth - except they carry too much other baggage. Intel occupies the sweet spot in this space.

NICs are only a very small part of Intel current revenues. Intel may be looking into more serious routers and switches (I mean Cisco country).

3Com will help in immediate top line revenue growth and Intel management and ownership will improve 3Com market share, new product development, and bottom line growth.

It is win, win.
