U.S. OPTIONS/3Com vols firm on bid
talk, await Q1

CHICAGO, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Implied volatility on options on 3Com Corp. (Nasdaq:COMS -
news) remained at the upper end of its recent range as traders looked ahead to the release of the
company's earnings next week.
Takeover rumors lingered and also helped keep volatility at lofty levels, traders said. ''Between these rumors and earnings next week, vols should stay firm into next week,'' said one market maker at the Pacific Exchange. 3Com is scheduled to report its fiscal first quarter results on September 22 after the market closes.
According to a First Call survey of 29 brokers, the company was expected to post a profit of $0.18 to $0.23 per share in the latest quarter. Trading in 3Com calls was brisk as the stock nudged higher after Prudential Securities upgraded the
stock to ''accumulate'' from ''hold.'' The soon-to-expire September 30 calls were among the most actively traded on the Pacific
Exchange, with volume topping 3,100 contracts.
3Com stock was up 9/16 to 30-7/8 in late trading.

Joe,

I agree wouldn't be surprised to se a couple of let down days after Greenspan. Lately it seems most of the option positions have been unwound by the Weds. of option exp. week.

I wouldn't be surprised to see COMS close at 30 on Fri.

All the above is just MHO. Just felt like throwing my 2 cents in.
