<< Ok Mr. GFR from 3com, Real Smart Money says you are biased and would love to see ASND burn. Problem: CSCO = LU+ASND . Different ATMs for different people; Stratocom ATM is the mercedes of ATM but like a mercedes too expensive for most tastes; perhaps Yurie is the Yugo of ATMs and so may be Livingston. ASND is the Honda of ATM. Even a compay like CSCO would buy ASND if they could (even if it was just to get rid of them and prevent LU from buying them out).>>

Leland - I am long ASND - have been for over three years. I own it based on long term earnings growth. I just think all the hype around LU may be misdirected - LU has established a pattern of buying small data companies and have bought direct competitors to ASND recently (livingston in the remote access space) and Yurie (in ATM access space). LU still needs high end IP and ATM switching, but their pattern so far has been to buy this type of technology from a smaller companies. If LU buys ASND great, but I'm not counting on it.

By the way, I wouldn't call CSCO the Mercedes of ATM and ASND the Honda. For carrier class ATM switching, ASND takes the cake currently. And Yurie isn't a Yugo of ATM as they make a completely complimentary product to core ATM switching.

To play completely in the carrier data core you need 4 things: High end IP routing, carrier class ATM switching (and these two will merge over time); Multi-service access concentration and dial up access (and these two will merge). ASND has all four - LU has two of them - I'd look for someone to buy ASND that has none of them (Ericsson, etc.) and I look for LU to buy their missing components and try and avoid overlap.

If I'm wrong and LU buys them, we all still make money.
