Compaq and Mentor Graphics Announce Strategic Alliance to
Support Electronic Designers On Windows NT

PR Newswire - September 16, 1998 09:46

Jump to first matched term

WILSONVILLE, Ore. and HOUSTON, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ)
and Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq: MENT) today announced an alliance to support electronic
designers in need of solutions based on the Intel architecture and Windows NT. The alliance will combine
Compaq's leading Professional Workstations with Mentor Graphics' portfolio of market-leading system
verification tools, industry-leading intellectual property cores, consulting services and best-in-class printed circuit
board (PCB) design solutions.

Compaq and Mentor Graphics will combine resources for the development and marketing of specific solutions
based on the Intel architecture and Windows NT that meet the needs of designers managing the complexities
of increasingly sophisticated and complicated designs. Mentor Graphics will do its internal Intel processor and
Windows NT-based computing on Compaq Professional Workstations, desktops, and servers.

"This alliance is great news for our mutual EDA customers considering a broad-based Windows NT
environment because it will deliver solutions combining powerful Compaq Professional Workstations with
robust, feature-rich EDA applications from Mentor Graphics to support our customers' most mission-critical
design environments," said Les Crudele, vice president and general manager, Workstation Division, Compaq
Computer Corporation. "In addition, Compaq's 25,000 highly trained service and support personnel worldwide
give our customers globally consistent support. Compaq workstations and Mentor Graphics design tools are
mainstays in the industry, and our customers now have two well-known industry leaders to help them manage the
complexities of increasingly sophisticated and complicated designs."

"Mentor Graphics recognizes Compaq's leadership in NT-based computing as well as its commitment to the
EDA market," said Walden C. Rhines, president and chief executive officer, Mentor Graphics. "NT presents
many opportunities and challenges for customers in EDA, especially given EDA's traditional Unix environment.
The alliance will address the complex issues of developing, porting and delivering our industry-leading design
solutions for our customers on NT. Customers will now have an integrated, high-quality solution for the NT-based
environment. This alliance is a fundamental part of our strategy to continue serving as leaders in the EDA
industry."

Mentor Graphics and Compaq have collaborated on the development, testing and certification of Mentor
Graphics' PCB design tools including Board Station(R), Design Architect(R) and Scepter(TM) on Compaq
Professional Workstations. Development and use of Mentor Graphics' Calibre(R) DSM physical verification
software and xCalibre(TM) parasitic extraction flow to work on Compaq Professional Workstations is also in
process.

Intel and Microsoft Applaud Alliance

"Windows NT is a growing platform for electronic design," said Bruce Irish, group marketing manager for
engineering and manufacturing at Microsoft Corporation. "Whether used for PCB, FPGA or IC design, Mentor
Graphics design tools, coupled with Compaq's Windows NT-based Professional Workstations, will allow the
electronic engineer to bring products to market quickly and at a competitive cost."

"Compaq and Intel are working together to ensure that Compaq Professional Workstations are optimized for
even the most compute-intensive EDA applications," said Anand Chandrasekher, general manager, Intel's
Workstation Product Division. "Compaq's strategic alliance with Mentor Graphics will make powerful and
affordable solutions available to a growing base of EDA professionals looking to integrate the Intel/NT platform
into their design environments."

>>As for the price cuts, they are not just whimsical things Intel dreams up one or two days in advance. They are scheduled well in advance<<

I think customers were surprised about the magnitude of the cuts.
Does Paul think it's important how much stock one owns? How would you know how much stock he owns? Both MSFT and INTC were down today & I think they will decline more if the Dow continues to slide. I doubt many on this thread have realized the "wealth effect" on consumption and how quickly this could change.

Then again, if the market rises, I'll be very happy with my small cap
tech and non tech stocks.
