From This Week In Fiber

Global Crossing will double the capacity of the Atlantic
Crossing (AC-1) undersea fiber-optic network 18 months ahead of
its initial schedule. The network will carry 80 Gbits/sec when the
capacity upgrade is completed. AC-1 went into commercial service
this past May, connecting the United States with the United
Kingdom. An additional link to Germany is scheduled to be
completed this November, with a Netherlands link activated in
December 1998. The company also announced that Deutsche
Telekom had doubled its capacity purchase commitment in a deal
worth approximately $60 million.

Thread,
Some good news for a change. Alcatel's warning is pretty bad, but they sell mostly into Europe. Maybe the US telecoms (*LECs), ISPs, and Cable TV (MSOs) companies are still spending heavily on upgrades to their networks. Just a guess for now. In the next few weeks, we should know.

Lucent Upbeat about Growth Prospects

NEW YORK, Sept 17- Telecommunications equipment giant Lucent Technologies Inc. Thursday said it remains comfortable with Wall Street earnings estimates for 1998 and continues to be optimistic about its growth prospects going forward.

The Murray Hill, N.J.-based company told analysts in a meeting Thursday it was comfortable with the "full range of analysts' estimates" for 1998, a Lucent spokesman said. The Wall Street consensus earnings estimate for 1998 is $1.70 a share, compared to $1.17 a share a year ago, according to First Call.

"We're upbeat about our prospects going forward," said Lucent spokesman Jeff Baum. "Our fundamentals and the fundamentals of the markets we address are strong," Baum said.

Lucent said it has limited exposure to markets suffering from financial turmoil, such as Southeast Asia and Russia. Lucent's bullish forecasts for strong future growth include any negative effect from those areas, Baum said.

Lucent's optimistic tone countered an earnings warning earlier Thursday from French telecommunications equipment company Alcatel. Shares of Alcatel fell 11-3/4 or 37 percent to 19-1/2 on the New York Stock Exchange after it warned its operating income would be hurt in part by the financial crises in Southeast Asia and Russia.

Alcatel's warning spooked investors and sent shares throughout the telecommunications equipment sector lower, analysts said.

"The strong position of DSC in access and switching, fixed and mobile, coupled with Alcatel's leadership position in transmission, broadband ATM, xDSL and data technology, creates a major power in the U.S. market - one capable of serving the smallest local exchange carrier, to the largest, international long distance carrier, as well as the new breed of entrepreneurial operators."

Thread,
Anybody know why Alcatel, who just spent $4.4 billion on what I thought was a data networker, has to go to Ascend for data networking products? I'm just curious about this. I don't understand it, but Ascend must have something that $4.4 billion didn't buy! Makes me glad I'm long ASND.
