Senators compromise on year 2000 bill
By Matt Hamblen

Key U.S. senators today announced a compromise agreement on the Year 2000 Information and Readiness Disclosure Act, which is expected to pass the Senate Judiciary Committee tomorrow.

The substitute bill wasn't released, but it drew bipartisan agreement from lawmakers and the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion. The bill aids the exchange of technical information among companies for the solving year 2000 problems and preparing contingency plans.

The senators who announced this at a press conference today included Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Robert Bennett (R-Utah) and Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.).

Since being introduced in July at President Clinton's request, the current measure has added protections for consumers purchasing software for personal use. Also new are provisions to encourage companies to provide information to the government on their year 2000 efforts without the fear that the government will divulge the information, according to a spokesman for the President's Council.
