<<help me understand why I cannot abandon my right to vote, and yet complain about the direction of the country>>

IMHO, if you allow other people to make your decisions for you, you have very little grounds for complaint. Rather than drop out and complain, you should become even more active, and attempt to influence the decisions. Complaining without taking an active role in the process is just complaining - it solves nothing, it changes nothing - why bother?

Johannes,You are asking why must you vote? It has been said that Democracy is a very bad form of government. But the best we have. The United States is often thought of as the pioneer in a great democratic experiment .The first of it's kind to demonstrate that government can indeed produce the potential for the varied life styles that the human species needs to bloom into it's future potential. But oh.. are we in our infancy. As you read this thread and others like it the flaws leap off the computer screen with a ferocity that would frighten any thinking person. Yet with all it's flaws American democracy is like a large and oh so beautiful and complex puzzle. Each of us is a piece of this puzzle. A puzzle that holds so much promise and when even one leaves this puzzle we diminish it's beauty.Think of it .Each human with his or her unique complex needs ,desires, and hopes multiply by more than a hundred million.Don't leave your voice out of this chorus Johannes.Your well thought out posts demonstrate that we need your vote.If you think that your vote cannot effect change in a system that is basically all or nothing you are wrong because you are missing the big picture. No matter how fiercely individualistic one may be we are all in some ways part of the human community and must accept our responsibility as such for it's future. As less of us vote the power becomes more concentrated in the hands of the few.Believe me these few understand how to manipulate power to their ends which will be to solidify and increase this power.American democracy has been around only a short time.In spite of our current safe and secure life style, history tells us there is no guarantee it will endure .We must all work to be sure that it does The future of humanity could be very sterile without it. Vote my friends vote.
