AMD seems pretty fast out of the gate with this new P300 processor for portables.

09:08 ET Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) 18: --Update-- Chip maker unveils K6/300 processor. Says chip priced at $229 in lots of 1000 vs the $637 Intel charges for its Pentium II chip.

09:05 ET Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) 18: Wall Street Journal reporting that company has developed a chip for the portable computer market that offers comparable performance to Intel technology, at one-third the price. AMD expected to unveil the 300 megahertz chip today. AMD says Compaq already on-board.

I was just reading about the first portables at this speed last week. PC Mag said the 300 portable Dell was clocking nearly as well as the 400 desk top.

Anyway, AMD is nothing if not aggressive on price. Is this wise?

Mark
