*Way to go USWest*> US West & eFusion Launch Internet Call Waiting Service September 18, 1998 DENVER, COLORADO, U.S.A., Newsbytes via NewsEdge Corporation : US West [NYSE:USW] has launched an Internet call waitingsystem developed by eFusion. According to the telecommunications carrier, the Online Call Manager (OCM) system, as it is known, allows modem users operating on a single voice line to know when voice calls are waiting for them, without the modem automatically dropping the line, as is the case with normal call waiting. According to US West, while some other carriers offer a similar type of service, OCM is the only one available that routes the voice call across the modem link to the user -- i.e. the modem does not drop the carrier. In use, OCM springs up as a pop-up window on the user's PC that identifies the calling party (from the caller ID information, if available) and gives the user a choice of what to do with the call: accept the call, either through the phone or the PC; send the call to voice-mail; or transfer the call to another line. Plans call for OCM to be rolled out to US West customers in the Omaha and Minneapolis-St. Paul areas by the end of the year, with additional exchange service areas having the service available during 1999. Sign-up to the service will cost $9, and there will be an ongoing line service rental of $8 per month for OCM, officials said. According to John Charters, US West's vice president of Internet services, OCM uses the capabilities of the existing telephone network alongside the firm's advanced IP (Internet Protocol) network. Plans call for US West to supply special phone handsets that plug straight into the PC, where customers do not want to use a speaker/microphone combination on the computer. The system software, developed by eFusion in conjunction with US West, requires an 486 or better equipped PC and a modem with a minimum connection speed of 14,400 bits per second.
