Lucent Technologies Awarded B$55 Million by JTB for Telecommunications Optical Network Backbone

September 18, 1998 MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via
NewsEdge Corporation --

Will supply high-speed, high-capacity
transmission system for

1999 South East Asia Games and 2000 APEC
Summit

BRUNEI DARUSSALAM-Lucent Technologies
today announced it has been awarded a
B$55 million (US$30 million) contract for a full
turnkey project to construct Jabatan
Telekom Brunei's (JTB) backbone
telecommunications network infrastructure.

The contract is for the design, supply, test,
commission and support of an optical
transport and access network infrastructure
using the latest state-of-the-art
Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) optical
fiber technology.

Lucent will supply SDH transmission
equipment including its WaveStar(tm) family
of next generation optical networking
systems. As part of the agreement, Lucent
Technologies will also supply its Network
Management System and optical fiber cable.

The ambitious infrastructure project will
provide JTB with a high capacity optical
network, which will allow JTB to offer
customers more bandwidth and very high
communication speeds for multimedia and
data applications. With the project expected
to be completed in 11 months, JTB's
world-class network will allow high-speed
digital transmission of speeds up to 2.5
Gigabits per second. Lucent's SDH equipment
incorporates a 'self-healing' ring architecture
which gives added protection to JTB's
network and insures reliability in the event of
a fiber cut.

According to JTB, among its reasons for
selecting Lucent's WaveStar series were that
the technology is cost-effective,
feature-rich and able to meet the demands
of the future. Lucent's industry-leading
Integrated Transport Management (ITM) also
gives full control of network elements, which
will allow JTB to realize the full potential of
SDH.

"We are very pleased to join JTB a second
time this month in providing state-of-the-art
telecommunications technology and
equipment to help Brunei meet the 21st
Century demands in telecommunications,"
said Raymond Tan, president of Lucent's
Global Service Provider Business for Brunei
Darussalam and Singapore. On September 3,
the JTB awarded Lucent a B$17 million
contract to upgrade its 12 Lucent 5ESS(R)
switches to be year 2000 ready.

With this expansion and modernization of
JTB's existing transmission network, JTB will
benefit from high-availability, high-speed
transmission, with added bandwidth that
results in shorter response times for
customers and a high level of automation
achieved via a powerful centralized
management system.

"Upon completion of the project, Brunei
Darussalam will have a high-bandwidth,
high-performance network infrastructure that
will be able to meet the bandwidth demand
of multimedia services, electronic
government and electronic commerce
services within Brunei Darussalam and the
world " said Buntar bin Osman, Director of
Telecommunications, Brunei Darussalam.

"This network will also meet the large
bandwidth requirements for upcoming
international events to be hosted in Brunei
Darussalam, such as the SEA Games 1999
and the Asia Pacific Economic Conference's
(APEC) Summit 2000," Buntar added. "The
successes of these two high-profile events
are dependent on the successful
implementation of this network and we have
every confidence in Lucent Technologies to
help us achieve our objectives."

Lucent Technologies, with more than 150
SDH networks deployed, is a leading provider
of fiber optic cable, SDH and Dense
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM)
products in the Asia/Pacific region and
around the world. Lucent was one of the first
companies to bring SDH transmission
technology to China, Japan, Thailand,
Indonesia and now to Brunei Darussalam.

Jabatan Telekom Brunei (JTB) is one of six
departments under the Ministry of
Communications, Brunei Darussalam. It offers
a wide range of domestic and international
telecommunication services in voice,
message and data communications.

Lucent Technologies Brunei has some 40
highly trained and experienced employees. In
addition to providing the local and long
distance networks ten years ago, in 1996
Lucent Technologies also set up the
country's GSM network for DST
Communications.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in
Murray Hill, N.J. US, designs, builds and
delivers a wide range of public and private
networks, communications systems and
software, data networking systems, business
telephone systems and microelectronic
components. Bell Labs is the research and
development arm for the company. For more

FACT SHEET

The WaveStar series to be installed includes:

-- WaveStar(tm) 16/1 is Lucent's
next-generation SDH multiplexer and

transport system and is able to multiplex PDH
and SDH bit rates

to higher levels up to 2.5 Gbit/s (STM-16).
Because of its wide

range in capacity, the system is a key
element for the building

of efficient and flexible networks.

-- WaveStar(tm) DACS, a next-generation,
high-capacity digital

cross-connect system. With increasing
bandwidth on the transport

network, the need arises to interconnect the
various networks

with a high capacity cross-connect.

-- Lucent SDH Network Management System
including Integrated

Transport Management, which is based on
Dynamic Network

Operations. ITM gives the unprecedented
ability to use the

intelligence built into smart network
elements. Quite simply, the

question, "What is the network ?" is best
answered by going out

and 'asking' the network itself. ITM provides
comprehensive and

integrated management of the entire network
from a single

operator location, including configuration
management, end-to-end

path design, fault and performance
management, easy-to-use

graphical user interface (GUI), just Point and
Click.
