Hi Paul... I'm in NT with a small position in NT today at 41. Today's fall is in sympathy with Alcatel. However Alcatel is different, and is badly constrained by French government interference. There's some good support around 39 or 40.
If it hasn't already been posted there's an excellent article on NT available on line in this months Red Herring.

NORTEL: Nortel achieves standardization from GTE

Presswire - September 17, 1998 13:48

M2 PRESSWIRE-17 September 1998-NORTEL: Nortel achieves standardization from GTE (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

ATLANTA - Nortel (Northern Telecom) [NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL] announces that GTE has standardized the Nortel AccessNode and AccessNode Express as an additional option for GR-303 applications in GTE's network. GTE Network Services, a unit of GTE Corp., has deployed these applications with systems that are currently used in California, Texas, and Florida.

"We are pleased that Nortel has expanded its AccessNode portfolio to include GR-303 interworking with systems such as the GTD-5 EAX. This standardization allows us to deliver basic and advanced services to diverse serving areas," said Barry Paulson, GTE vice president-operations planning and support. "We look forward to furthering our collaborative effort with Nortel in order to meet our customer's access requirements."

With Nortel's GR-303 multivendor interface (MVI), AccessNode and AccessNode Express can extend many of their inherent advantages--such as Service Adaptive Access, efficiency, application versatility, a broad service portfolio, flexible capacity, traffic engineering, and network architecture--to a much wider set of networks and to far more subscribers. The result is a dramatic increase in benefits to service providers, opening up a wealth of new revenue and application possibilities.

"Nortel is committed to providing value-added services to our customers and enhancing access network flexibility. Our GR-303 MVI offers interoperability, complements the advanced AccessNode features, and offers our customers a clear competitive edge," said Don Richmond, vice president and general manager, Access Networks, Nortel. We are proud that GTE has chosen our AccessNode and AccessNode Express for volume deployment in the GR-303 environment.

GTE uses Nortel's AccessNode and AccessNode Express for next generation digital loop carrier (NGDLC) applications. AccessNode was first introduced into GTE in 1994 and currently has hundreds of network elements in service throughout the United States.

Nortel's AccessNode and AccessNode Express are versatile, full-service access vehicles which support multiple access mediums and bandwidth management for both TDM and packet data networks. With Nortel's AccessNode product family, a single integrated network element supports a full portfolio of business and residential services, including POTS, Digital Centrex, ISDN, transparent LAN, DS-1 and DS-3 services and high-speed copper access services.

With 1997 revenues of more than US$23 billion, GTE is one of the world's largest telecommunications companies and a leading provider of integrated telecommunications services. In the United States, GTE provides local service in 28 states and wireless service in 17 states; nationwide long-distance and internetworking services ranging from dial-up Internet access for residential and small-business consumers to Web-based applications for Fortune 500 companies; as well as video service in selected markets. Additional information about GTE can be found on the Internet at gte.com.

Nortel works with customers worldwide to design, build, and deliver telecommunications and IP-optimized networks. Customers include public and private enterprises and institutions; Internet service providers; local, long-distance, cellular and PCS communications companies, cable television carriers, and utilities.

Nortel's common shares are listed on the New York, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and London stock exchanges. Nortel had 1997 revenues of US$15.5 billion and Bay Networks, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nortel, had revenues of US$2.4 billion during its most recent fiscal year. The combined company's workforce totals approximately 80,000 employees worldwide.
