Doubts Arise as Divx Readies for National Debut Some say the DVD
hybrid's 'no return' format won't click with consumers. Failure could
mean trouble for backer Circuit City.
LA Times - Thursday, September 17, 1998

A year and a half after the roll-out of the digital videodisc, or DVD, a
long-anticipated hybrid known as Divx is set to launch nationally within the
next few weeks. The question is whether Divx (digital video express) will be
DOA (dead on arrival).

DIVX is dead. DVDs will be the next format.

Patrick:

Re: . By year 2000, I bet you VHS will be dead too

I'll take that bet meaning that I think VHS won't be dead by the year 2000. <g>

Too early. (And no recording capabilities.)

But Blockbuster is doing the right thing at doing 2.99 rental releases. Offer someone enough of reasons and make it cheap enough and they will buy...

Again China does not have any VHS and that is the big easy for DVD IMO.

Shane.
