Clinton opposes Jones case sanction

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- A conservative organization has no grounds
to request court sanctions against President Clinton in the Paula Jones case,
the president's lawyers said.

The Landmark Legal Foundation has not shown it would be affected by the
outcome of Mrs. Jones' civil lawsuit and presented no grounds why its brief
should be considered, Clinton's lawyers said in court papers filed
Wednesday.

Landmark filed papers Sept. 3 asserting Clinton may have obstructed Mrs.
Jones sexual harassment case against him and should be forced to explain his
actions in court.

The Kansas City, Mo.-based group also had asked for an expedited hearing
so any information gleaned from Clinton could be included in Independent
Counsel Kenneth Starr's report on Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky.
Starr has since submitted his report to Congress.

The group's filing came after a Sept. 1 order in which U.S. District Judge
Susan Webber Wright said she would release a transcript of Clinton's Jan.
17 deposition in which the president denied having sexual relations with
Lewinsky.

She also suggested she may consider sanctions against Clinton, citing the
president's Aug. 17 admission of an "inappropriate relationship" with the
former White House intern.
