I believe you are allowed to purchase options, and write covered calls, in an IRA. However, many brokers don't allow it, you'd have to check around to find a cooperative broker.

I don't know if CBOE options are prohibited or not by the IRS.
I think I've heard IRAs are not allowed to buy Options because they are too risky, and the TRUSTEE didn't want to be on the hook for inappropriate activity.
.
Many brokers won't let you buy a speculative Limited Partnership in their IRA either... but other IRA Trustees (Delaware Charter for example) will allow it.

Mark,
My IRA at Brown&Co has been allowed to write covered calls and puts; the only requirement for the puts was that I retain a free cash balance to satisfy assignment.
