Gene,

While Merrill has forecasted $0.14 per share for Q4 and a loss of ($0.96) for the year, unless my math or data is bad, this means they're projecting -$0.26 for Q3.

Unless ML has gone off the deep end, it seems that they're counting on AMD to release the 400 MHz K6-2 early in the fourth quarter. This will cut right into Intel's sweet spot. The result will be a higher ASP, more units shipped, and mo' money in the end.

The key, of course, is execution. If AMD were to reach 400 MHz very soon, it would be a very remarkable accomplishment. Right now, AMD is busy trying to keep the 350 MHz yields at high enough levels to satisfy the big OEMs like IBM. The prices at Price Watch are currently $230 for the K6-2 350, $150 for the K6-2 333, and $115 for the K6-2 300. A 50% price jump for a 5% speed increase suggests to me that the supply is pretty low for the 350 MHz part. (It could also mean that demand is sky-high, but I doubt that's the case.)

Maybe if AMD still has trouble, they could always release both a K6-2 400 MHz and a K6-2 380 MHz, where the 380 MHz version will run on the same 95 MHz bus that the K6-2 333 runs on. If you recall years back, that's the same thing Intel did when the Pentium 90 was abundant but the Pentium 100 was a rarity.

Gene - Re: "none of us participants in the contest came very close."

You are developing quite a habit of making erroneous estimates, Gene.
