Don't have any handy references, but in a nutshell, Multi-vendor storage is enterprise class storage designed to work with hardware from a variety of vendors. Many current products are SCSI based but most new designs are fibre-channel based. Some of the characteristics:
Stand-alone fault tolerance and recovery. These units allow for hot spares, automatic data recovery to replace a failed disk, flexible configuration so a cabinet of 24 drives may look like a single drive, or any combination of drives. Multiple RAID supported in a single cabinet. Built in data caching, up to several gigabytes in some models. Hot replacement of drives.
Advanced models support other characteristics, such as remote mirroring (up to 15,000 meters), automatic hierarchical storage (moving infrequently used data to slower media), automatic backup, and other features which reduce the workload and risk of IT shops. Most systems can support multiple hosts (servers usually) on a single storage system.

Some of these systems are quite large, with hundreds of gigabytes or even terrabytes of data on-line.
